telephone tinWe are all required to give feedback in a business context, maybe on a colleague’s performance, on the products or services of a supplier or on how to streamline a company’s processes by filling in a questionnaire.  Feedback can be a very useful tool as it offers others a glimpse of how you experience them and it highlights the impact (good or bad) they have on you or the company.

Leaders create hope in difficult times by telling stories PDF Print E-mail

Making a speachLast week I had to thank the leader of a non-government organisation for his contributions over the past five years. But I had to do it in such a way that it motivated the 150 volunteers and leaders present and get their buy-in for the road ahead. I decided to use stories. Do you have a year-end function where you need to talk to your team? Is there an annual leadership meeting on the horizon? What does one say in difficult times when businesses and markets are under pressure? Why not scrap the lectures and the slides with the statistics and tell a story instead?

How to kill PowerPoint karaoke or why bullet points make you powerless in communication PDF Print E-mail

Kevin Smith, a manager at Dell, says: "The audience showed up to hear the expert (that's you) talk about a solution to a problem that's causing them pain, not to hear you perform 'PowerPoint karaoke' by reading off PowerPoint slides."

The point of a presentation is to move people to new action or thoughts. Although PowerPoint presentations can help you in this process, they are very often overused. One of the big culprits is toooooooooooo many bullet points. Too many bullet points become the enemy of the presenter. I have listed five bullets below about the drawbacks of PowerPoint karaoke (I get the irony).  I also suggest what you can do instead to make your presentations (and PowerPoint presentations) more powerful.

champagne“I drink it when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it when I’m not hungry and drink it when I am.  Otherwise I never touch it - unless I’m thirsty.” This famous quote from the legendary Mme Lily Bollinger of the famous champagne house Bollinger pretty much sums up the success story of champagne: a beverage that is an absolute must for birthdays, weddings, any celebration as a matter of fact, and sundowners on the beach or on top of Lion’s Head.

Holiday stress? PDF Print E-mail

chrismas tree sadDrs Holmes and Rahe do research on the stressors in life that make people ill. Holidays are actually listed as a stressor on their scale! Why would that be? Because people change their routines, sleep different hours and usually drink more and eat less healthily. Family members spend more hours together than usual (a very good thing!) but often these members do not always gel for so long. Family roles sometimes change. Small children are under the parents’ supervision for 24 hours (no day care or after care!). And different family members have different dreams for the holidays.

If you've been struggling to relate, manage or connect with someone, you have probably been dealing with a Storming Bulldozer, a Moaning Shark or a Pleasing Goody Two Shoes. Or maybe with a Grounded Grower. Which one are you? Where do your colleagues, family members or friends fit in?
