A tricky and frequently asked wine question is: “How long would this bottle of wine last?” Even though tempted to reply with a sarcastic “depends whether it is in my wine rack or yours” or “about an hour after you’ve opened it” I usually opt for a more politically correct answer: “How long is a piece of string?” The reason is there are so many variables; there cannot be one simple answer. To get closer to a real answer, let’s look at what happens to wine during ageing and what determines the life expectancy of a bottle of wine.

It is interesting how health warnings on the back labels of wine bottles seem to become more dramatic and assertive, while wine lovers continue singing the praises of wine’s health benefits. Is there actually any scientific proof about these alleged benefits or does this subject belong in the same category as the tooth fairy and Santa Clause?

Few things in life are as annoying as a smart ass. Unfortunately the wine scene is full of them. I’m sure the majority of people have come across the wine snob – you know, the guy that will casually compare the Chardonnay in his glass to the Chassagne Montrachet that he had the night before. If this does not impress or baffle his dining partners, he’ll chuck in a bit of jargon. Just as you are taking a sip of your red wine, he announces that he detects Brett on the wine.

I find it quite entertaining to browse through wine shops, looking at different labels and what winemakers and marketing people will do to sell wine. Yes, I know, I need to get a life. Anyway, they use different shaped bottles, brightly coloured labels, the Big Five from Africa or any other critter. And then, my personal favourite: bling. They will slap on a bronze medal from a wine show in Uzbekistan to convince you that their wine really is the best; that you absolutely have to buy it. But do medals on a bottle affect one’s wine-buying decisions?

The French came up with a term that was supposed to explain the concept, but managed to confuse us all. They call it terroir.
